From Nepal to the frontline

Under the illusion of well-paid jobs, thousands of Nepali men are lured to Russia, only to be sent untrained to the frontlines in Ukraine. This feature uncovers a system of deception, economic desperation and political neglect, where vulnerable migrants become cannon fodder in a war that is not theirs.

Nepal – Thousands of Nepali men are being recruited under false pretenses to fight in the war in Ukraine. Through social media and intermediaries, they are promised jobs as cooks, drivers or logistics workers — but once in Russia, they are sent to the frontlines with no training.

The testimonies of Dawa, Birajan, and Ishwor reveal how poverty, deception and a lack of prospects drive young men to take this life-threatening step.

Their families are left behind in uncertainty, with no support from the government. Activists like Kritu Bhandari fight for recognition and repatriation, but face political indifference.

This report exposes a harsh reality: the economic exploitation of vulnerable migrants in a war that is not theirs.
